Overnight Guests’ Laundry Tips
Overnight guests, whether they’re family or not, involve additional laundry. Of course, the majority of the visitors arrive over the holidays, when there are so many other things to attend to in addition to ordinary domestic responsibilities.
There are, however, ways to reduce the laundry loads of more people (and possibly their pets) in the house. You won’t be left holding the stuffed laundry bag after the visit is done if you plan ahead.
And to the visitors: While a hostess gift of chocolates, flowers, or wine is nice, being a kind guest is always the better option. Ask your host or hostess what you can do to assist throughout your stay. Then go ahead and do it!
-
PLAN YOUR LAUNDRY NEEDS BEFORE YOUR GUESTS ARRIVE.
We usually know when our guests will arrive. Make every effort to plan ahead and prepare bed sheets. Check that all sheets have been changed and that all blankets, pillows, and bed covers are as clean as possible. If the linens aren’t thoroughly clean, your guests will encounter unpleasant scents and stains.
Check your inventory, and if there aren’t enough bed sheets for everyone, phone family and ask them to bring their own. Make sure to give them bed sizes so they can bring the appropriate size sheets.
Encourage your guests to bring their own beach towels if you live near a lake, the ocean, or have a pool.

LAUNDRY AND VISITING ANIMALS
If your home is not already pet-friendly, there are several things you should think about to make it safe for the visiting animal and to prevent your bedding and furniture from stains.
Make sure all laundry supplies are safely packed away before the animal arrives. Laundry detergent and dryer sheets are toxic to pets. When there is a strange pet around, always check laundry equipment before using them to ensure that it has not crept inside.
Cover comforters and upholstery with an old bed sheet, especially if they are labeled “dry clean only.” The sheet is simple to throw in the laundry.
Hopefully, you and the pet owner discussed sleeping arrangements and the cleanup of anticipated accidents, shedding, and messes prior to the stay. Prepare yourself for the unexpected!
-
REQUEST ASSISTANCE FROM GUESTS
If your overnight guests are family or close friends, ask them to assist you in making beds when they arrive and changing linens when they leave. Most people will be delighted to assist. This is especially critical if you have back-to-back guests.
Stack extra sheets and blankets in each guest room closet so they may change them themselves. Even if you don’t want to ask them to wash a load of sheets, this is a simple activity they can complete.
Another task checked off your list.
-
ASSIGN A TOWEL COLOR TO EACH GUESTS
You’ve given each of your guests a set or two of clean towels. These can be placed in restrooms or on the bed of a guest. Assign each guest a specific color of towels to limit the quantity of towels that must be washed throughout the visit.
That way, there will be no mix-ups and the towels can be reused. Set up a collapsible drying rack in the guest room if there aren’t enough towel rods in the bathroom to keep damp towels and bathmats.
It’s also a good idea to put a washing hamper or basket in the bathroom or each bedroom for guests to use. When they leave, they can put their dirty laundry in the basket and carry it to the laundry room. Even if you do the washing, it’s one less thing to do after the visit.
-
Use Table Linens Multiple Times
Using paper products is the simplest method to prevent having to wash extra table linens. If it isn’t your style, assign each person a different napkin ring. Cloth napkins can thus be used for more than one meal.
-
Prepare the Laundry Room
If your guests are staying for more than a day or two, they may require clean clothes and may need to do laundry, so make sure your washing room is ready. Make a brief list.
-
- Is the laundry area tidy and uncluttered?
- Provide a step-by-step guide for using the washer or dryer. This is especially crucial
for high-efficiency washers, which use a lot less detergent. Your visitors may not know how to use these
properly. Nothing is worse than a sudsy washing room! - Do I have the necessary supplies (detergent, stain remover, and dryer sheets)?
- Is there an empty washing basket available for guests to use?
-
Laundry time can be spent with family
If you have grandchildren visiting, now is the time to teach them how to do laundry. When it comes to teaching a pre-teen or teenager how to do laundry, most grandparents have more patience (and possibly more laundry expertise) than parents.
